Michael Vick was once one of the highest profile players in the NFL but today he was sentenced to 23 months in prison for the part he played in a dogfighting ring which was based on his property in rural SE Virginia. His stay in prison means he will miss at least one and a half or more NFL seasons and then a football team needs to sign him when he is released. Vick had a 10 year, $130 million contract with the Atlanta Falcons, but is now struggling financially because of this case. He has lost lucrative endorsements and several financial institutions have lawsuits against him for defaulting on his loans. The Atlanta Falcons are trying to get back $20 million in bonuses they had given him. Two of his homes have been up on the auction block, including the one in Surry, Virginia which was where the dogfighting took place. This home is up for auction this Saturday.
Of the 53 pit bulls seized from the NFL football players property in June, 4 died shortly after they were discovered, one was put to sleep in October and another one recently. The other 47 have been recommended for placement and possible adoption in the future. Michael Vick has deposited $928,073.04 in escrow for the care and evaluation of these dogs, at the government's request. What Michael Vick's future holds as an NFL player needs to be seen.
