The Dallas Cowboys are getting a new stadium. Their current location is Texas Stadium which opened in 1971. The new venue is scheduled to open before 2009 NFL season and it will hold 80,000, with a possible extension to 100,000 fans. The new stadium has the possibility of being used by college football teams, other sporting and non-sporting organizations and the AT&T Cotton Bowl’s annual game.

The stadium was originally estimated to cost $650 million, but is now in excess of $1 billion.  This will make it one of the most expensive sports venues ever constructed. Dallas Cowboys owner/ general manager is being helped with the finances by an increase in sales tax by on-half to one percent for the Arlington voters. Arlington will supply $325 million and Jones will cover the cost overruns. The NFL is also contributing an additional $150 million, per their policy for giving teams a certain lump sum for construction financing.

The stadium is yet to be named, but there is a movement by some football fans to name it Tom Landry Stadium.
