Now that Joe Gibbs has resigned-retired as Washington Redskins coach, who will come next?
Marty Schottenheimer is one of the names that is coming up. Schottenheimer, one season coach for the Washington Redskins in 2001, left on less-than-wonderful terms after having an 8-8 season. Washington Redskins owner, Dan Snyder was willing to keep him as coach, but not willing to allow him total control of football-related decisions. Schottenheimer wouldn't agree to the reduction in power, so he left.
Schottenheimer can clearly still coach with a 14-2 record for the San Diego Chargers last season before being let go following a second round playoff loss. His name surfaced this season concerning coaching vacancies with The Baltimore Ravens and the Atlanta Falcons.
Snyder and Schottenheimer have remained on good terms. Snyder helped Schottenheimer's son, who was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, to find a doctor who had treated him (Snyder) for the same disease.
If the Washington Redskins nix Gregg Williams and are unable to lure Bill Cowher out of retirement, maybe Schottenheimer will be the man as the new Washington Redskins coach. Time will tell.
